The Latinos Emergency Assistance Fund (LEAF) assists our neighbors in Door and Kewaunee counties who are experiencing financial emergencies. In collaboration with the Hispanic Resource Center, Door County Medical Center, Hope United Church of Christ and other local churches and agencies, LEAF raises the funds and provides the volunteers to work with the Social Services team at DCMC to provide discrete and reliable emergency assistance to targeted families for rent and utilities, medical care, transportation, employment and household goods.

A snapshot of the families served by LEAF in the last three years reveals almost all wage earners work in agricultural, dairy and service industries after arriving from Mexico or Central and Latin American countries seeking a better life for their families. By far the most common emergent need is for past due rent and utility payments. More than half of these families care for children and adults enduring chronic and serious health conditions. All are learning English as their second language. Most working adults are not U.S. citizens and are hesitant in seeking community assistance when needed.
